Firstly, I think building a good rapport with my students is important in establishing a comfort level that is conducive to learning. I've found that students(especially children) are more engaged, ask more questions, and have more fun in the lesson if the teacher makes an effort to connect with his or her student. I certainly teach everyone to read music if they don't already know how, but I really like to help people hear the music they want to make. This is done through listening assignments, playing with my students during lessons, some music memorization, and singing. I was born and raised in New York City. All my life I have been passionate about the arts and music is certainly one of my greatest passions. I started studying classical violin at the age of 6 at the Third Street Music school in New York. (studied under the Suzuki method). I always make sure my students and their parents have realistic expectations when they start taking music lessons. For instance, violin is a difficult instrument to play and it can take months of practice to play a simple tune. However, it can be fun and enjoyable as long as it is understood that these simple accomplishments in playing the violin are in fact rather big ones.
