For beginner piano students I use Alfred's books, which has different beginner levels for different ages. At first I perform my first lesson, where I decide which beginner book will much with the student, then I recommend an appropriate book for them. I also don't mind at all another company of books if they prefer so. For beginner violin students I recommend String builder or Essential elements books. They both are good skill building books. My style is closer to the Russian style than to the American style. This tends to involve more discipline, an emphasis on focus and concentration, and a more direct communicative approach. I don't usually mince words, although I am very supportive and gentle. My students seldom suffer self-confidence problems, because we are always too concerned with improving ourselves. I try my best to keep lessons fun, especially with the younger students. For example, Sometimes we play music games, sometimes we walk/dance to learn about rhythm, sometimes we sing. I also have small group practices each month to combine students at about the same level, they play togher, they perform for each other, make constructive suggestions and encourage each other. Each student is very different, I usually try to get to know the student ( and parents) at the first few lessons so I know which approach works better to help the student. Read More

My approach to learning an instruments is to have the students learn to play by ear first before they can start learning to read music. I find that most students are able to progress quickly because it frees them to focus on the playing the instruments rather than reading notes. As of this updated bio due to COVID-19 (Nov. 2020), Greg has been doing a hybrid format of teaching, primarily through Zoom with some in person instruction while maintaining orders of social distancing and wearing masks. He is currently on faculty at Santiago Canyon College, Santa Ana College, Neal Music Instruction in Anaheim, WePlay Music in Irvine, and La Serna High School in Whittier.
