For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the Suzuki Violin Method (Viola version available) with occasional ear training with the piano with the Kodaly method. For intermediate and advanced students, I introduce a variety of etudes, scale books, and solo repertoire, e.g. Carl Flesch, Kreutzer, Mazas, Dont, Dounis, and Unaccompanied Bach, etc. For viola students or violinists who are looking into doubling the viola, I introduce many techniques including Karen Tuttle and Primrose Scales to help along with the transition. At Richland, I was the lead instructor in the areas of string performance and music theory, as well as director of the Richland String Orchestra and the Richland Chamber Strings. Highlights of my performing career have included performances of the Kabalevsky and Shostakovich concertos with the Clear Lake Symphony, the Fort Bend Symphony, and the Houston Youth Symphony. I served as principal cellist of the Henry Mancini Festival Orchestra, performed live with the Danielle Georgiou Dance Group, recorded with the hard rock band Our Last Night (check out the music video below!), and played for several years as part of a Persian-Flamenco fusion band. As a student I had many teachers who made me achieve at their pace and with their understanding of what the violin required. Ultimately the classical route did not give me enough freedom to play the way I wanted to. In my work as a teacher I have found that the pursuit of an instrument, though hard work, should fundamentally be enjoyable for the student. Whether it is finding the music that resonates deeply with you, or constructing practice assignments that are clear and achievable within a week, I want to connect with each student I teach and help them to find a regular rhythm in their lessons that keeps them feeling productive. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More

With consistent practice and lessons I’ve had success with having some of my youngest students start with Mozarts twinkle little star and in 2-3 years play at a very high level with skill, artistry and reading abilities in Suzuki books 4/5 Vivaldi Concertos. Students start off with a box violin to focus on posture and ear training right away. Once some of the fine motor skills are established, we transfer these skills directly to the violin, and begin create sound on the instrument. Read More

I teach a combination of Suzuki and traditional methods. I grew up as a Suzuki student, but in my professional teaching life have learned to add additional methods into lessons to supplement training. For young, beginner students, I start them off with a method book like "All for Strings," which teaches first by rote. Not long after the students achieve the basic skills of the violin, we incorporate the Suzuki method and note reading. Read More

I love introducing children to new musical concepts and coming alongside them on this often life-long musical journey. There is unique relationship that forms during private music lessons, one that can have a large impact on the student, and I take that responsibility very seriously. That said, I like to make learning to play the violin as fun and easy as possible without sacrificing fundamental technique. I have had great sucess with various practice stragegies and find my students are highly motivated by these. Read More
