After my own experience with it as well as teaching it, Suzuki has great techniques and music for getting students experience in sight-reading, ear training, and memorization. With the youngest students I start with the fundamentals such as naming the different parts of the instrument and some basic rules with notes. Acronyms and games are always the best way to memorize the different rules. I write out detailed lessons plans for each individual student, constructed specifically for their learning process. I set up each lesson of what and how to practice at home. So whatever we do in the lesson, is what you are to do in your personal practice, making it super easy! I suggest each students sits with the instrument at least 3 days a week, not including lesson day. I give you fun and easy warm ups to explore how to use the instrument. I teach from a flexible curriculum depending on the student's goals and interests. If someone wants to learn technique, music theory, songwriting, how to play Taylor Swift songs, arranging, composing, confidence, et cetera we will work on what is driving them to take lessons and learn! If the student is younger I will provide them with an organized syllabus and “fun” damentals! If they are older, I will help them find a way to stick with the music and accomplish their goals. For beginner students, I like to work on positioning the instrument, proper bow hold, and simple string crossing exercises. A great beginners book is the quick steps to note reading. I believe beginner students should be practicing with this book every day. When they are ready to start learning pieces, I really like to use the Suzuki books. This works for both young beginners and adult beginners. For students who are more advanced, I am adamant about them practicing scales and etudes. Read More
