For beginner students, I like to work on positioning the instrument, proper bow hold, and simple string crossing exercises. A great beginners book is the quick steps to note reading. I believe beginner students should be practicing with this book every day. When they are ready to start learning pieces, I really like to use the Suzuki books. This works for both young beginners and adult beginners. For students who are more advanced, I am adamant about them practicing scales and etudes. Read More

I will vary my methods based on the individual student. For students between 3 and 7, I will use the Suzuki method, which in my experience is best for students of that age. For beginners after that, I will use method books and repertoire that not only addresses the students technical and musical development at that point in time, but is also fun and enjoyable to play. I create custom lesson plans for each student based on their level, interests and goals. Typically I start brand new beginners with the basics, learning the parts of the instruments and the notes. Being a very visual learner myself, I enjoy using method books such as the Sassmannshaus series, as they are beautifully illustrated and help to capture and hold young children's attention. I started teaching privately in 2010 and have helped students of all ages prepare for their exams (grades 1 to 8), auditions and other performances. Most of my students are long-term students and have been learning with me for 3-4 years, with some up to 6 years. I take great pride in their success and they have had a 100% success rate in the ABRSM exams. In addition to teaching privately, I have also taught in various primary schools in the London Borough of Newham (including in Winsor and Park primary schools), teaching violin to small groups of students in Years 5 and 6 (4th and 5th Grade) to take steps 1, 2 and grade 1 in the ECAM programme created by the London College of Music and the University of West London.
