My private teaching career began in high school, where I was asked by the music teachers in my school district in Westchester, New York to assist in preparing middle- and elementary school students for local competitions and festivals (such as NYSSMA). During college, I was able to maintain a private studio and was fortunate enough to spend summers assistant teaching at music festivals. I have taught a range of students from kids to teenagers to adults on violin, viola, piano, and drums. I have taught at churches, summer camps, colleges, student homes, and schools. I have taught a variety of genres, but classical music is certainly my forte. I currently teach at Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn, NY, where I also teach students after school as well, so I have a surplus of experience working with students of varying ages in a professional and nonprofessional environment. I began teaching lessons part time five years ago when I was an undergraduate. I have worked with all ages, from young students to teenagers to adult learners. I also have experience coaching small ensembles at summer string camps. I love to give my students opportunities to play music together and for each other. When I was taking lessons as a young student, I found that the community that my teacher fostered at his studio by holding recitals, weekly group classes and holiday events was just as important to my improvement as my one-on-one time with my teacher. I first discovered my love of teaching in college, more than 10 years ago. Since then, I have made it my mission to make learning informative, engaging, and fun. It is important to encourage regular and consistent practice time during the week in between lessons so we can use our lesson time most productively and make your learning experience more enjoyable. Since graduating with my Masters in Cello Performance in 2005 from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, I have been consistently teaching. Most of my teaching for the past 13 years has been going to students' homes. I also encourage the students to participate in yearly recitals and local community engagements throughout the year. My approach to teaching is to share my love for music with my students. I will allow students to go at their own pace, and set realistic goals and expectations. I like to focus on intonation heavily, as anything other than excellent intonation is not good playing, in the words of a former instructor. I also encourage creative expression in my students, and will often ask them to try different methods of playing a single phrase in order to increase the depth of their musicality. Read More
