In 2019 I graduated from UMass Amherst with a BM in Jazz studies and a BS in environmental science. Studying with Eric Berlin (principal trumpet of the Albany Symphony Orchestra) and Jeff Holmes (grammy winning piano and trumpet player) informed my knowledge of trumpet technique and music theory. For beginning students who are children, I typically begin with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements; as well as other, more auditory practices that do not require a book. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce other solo repertoire pieces that I feel the student is ready for, and assist in musical execution for future recitals. As a highschooler I was very motivated to help the young musicians of the Middle School. I would dedicate a period of my day to running sectionals and teaching students in the Middle and High School. Though I was never paid for this work, as I was just fine doing it for free, I learned much about effective and ineffective ways of communication in teaching.
