For beginning students, I always start by learning the notes on the staff that corresponds with their specific instrument. Knowledge and confidence of this is crucial to the learning process. Next, I pick a method book to work through to learn the fundamentals. For trombone, I use Rubank's "Elementary Method." I create an environment where the student can feel as if they can ask any question and can make mistakes without being looked down on.  I encourage the student to problem solve their own issues through critical thinking. My goal is to teach you so you don't need to be taught anymore. We will work on a given concept continuously until it is understood and able to be produced. My primary teaching philosophy is one of showing by example. Book learning is excellent and necessary and I use an assortment of standard materials and literature to assign lessons. I am especially fond of the teaching method of Laurie Frink and John McNeil and their joint manual "Flexus" and the basic Carmine Caruso embouchure studies literature.
