My interactions with them has pushed me to accept the responsibility to share my experiences and knowledge to help motivate the next generation of great Musicians. As i continue my Professional musical journey, I am constantly thinking of ways

EXPERIENCE

My teaching experience dates back to 15 years ago. I was motivated by my previous teachers and wanted to do the same. I have taught all levels of development ranging from beginner to College level. I have taught at Community Music schools up to and including Oberlin College. On each level, I always find it a challenge to keep the interest of the student at the forefront. By being accessible and willing to work through any issues goes a long way. I feel my teaching style and information reaches all students, no matter the level of accomplishment.

METHODS USED

I successful warm up exercises for all of my students. These exercises typical touch on the basics fundamentals that are incorporated in playing trumpet. Long tones to develop sound and tone... Lip Slurs to develop flexibility and strength of embochure muscles. As we develop the basics, we will progress through First Book of Practical Studies for Cornet and Trumpet by Robert W. Getchel. All while paying close attention to tone production and facilitating articulations. These melodies are fun to play and inspiring for the student to hear his/her progression. Further develop will take us to Arban's for more advanced studies.

LESSON STYLE

My teaching approach focuses heavily on the fundamentals of the instrument and its relationship to Music... All students are different so I tend to approach slowly and access their reactions to my suggestions. It is so important not to make a student feel pressured to achieve, especially in Music... I want their interest and will to excel to be their own personal choice and quest. I think it is important for students to feel supported by their teacher as I will make myself as accessible as possible to answer any question or instill inspiring words to motivate their progress.

Duane E. has been teaching trumpet to my son Israel for seven years. I have been amazed at the patience and dedication Duane has shown toward my son. Not only did Duane provide instruction on proper technique, he opened the door to the world of jazz to an eight-year-old, and thus has had the most profound influence of any teacher in my now teenager's life. Duane has guided my son and encouraged him through auditions and performances. His calm, nurturing approach instills confidence in his students, and his professionalism and easy sense of humor draw the respect of students and parents alike. For Duane E. to be teaching my son is like hitting the jackpot: he's both a talented recording artist who you can see perform in a club and hear on the radio, but he is also a passionate educator who makes time for his students. I attribute my son's love for music, and for jazz in particular, to his relationship with Duane. Duane has guided him in his musicianship, and helped him hone his skills in soloing, improvisation, and musicianship. But more than that, Duane has taught my son the significance of good character, and impressed upon him the importance of listening to and respecting his band mates. The lessons Duane has taught my son have gone beyond trumpet, beyond jazz, and permeated his development from a rambunctious little kid to the ever-improving young man he is today.

I've always loved the sound of the trumpet and jazz. I played the trumpet for a few years, from age 11 to about age 14 but never found a teacher with whom I felt a good fit. So I quit the horn in 1960. Then some 40 years later, in the Spring of 2001 I had a dream that I was playing jazz on a small stage with several other musicians. The next day I knew I had to get a horn and give it another go. For the next five years I searched for a teacher. I tried several but none were authentic jazz musicians. Any real jazz players I met and asked about lessons were not interested in a teaching 56 year old guy who was starting from ground zero. But then I met Duane E. in the fall of 2006. He was playing with a small jazz combo at at Sunday Brunch restaurant in my neighborhood. Duane's great tone was exactly the goal of what I wanted to be as a trumpet player. I sat and listened for over an hour and as I left I asked Duane for his card. I figured there's no way someone this good would be interested in teaching me. But I gave him a call anyway and to my surprise and delight he was willing to give me lessons. That was the start of a productive association that is now in its 17th year. I knew from the first lesson that I had found the teacher I was looking for. Duane's patient and gentle style of teaching is was what I needed to open up musically. If someone had told me in 2006 that by now I'd be able to play without fear in front of people, to have been a member of a jazz band and raise over $15,000 for a charity that I support with my playing, I would have not believed it possible. Yet that's where things stand today and I have Duane to thank for it. Of course, I had to put in the work, but Duane gave me the map and the guidance to get me here. It's no exaggeration to say that Duane has been one of the most influential teachers of any kind that I've ever had the opportunity to study with.
