I have B.M. in Acoustic Composition and Electronic Music, 10 years of playing/performing French horn, 5 rigorous years of piano instruction and performance, and a whole lifetime of singing. During my time obtaining my degree, I learned about a plethora of subjects--standard, 18th, and 20th-century theories, theoretical applications, old and new compositional and performance techniques, timbre blending and sonority, standard and experimental notation practices, music business/marketing, etc. These extra areas of expertise lend for well-rounded color for the lessons I teach. For beginning students who are just picking up the horn, we focus on the very basics on how to make noises on it. Once they understand how it make sounds, we slow work on refining and controlling so we can actually learn to play! Older and more experienced students will learn how to make Music, not just playing the notes on the page. A lot of time goes into understanding musicality, so we will often listen to recordings, play together to find different way to express musical ideas, and take time to really understand and comprehend different music genres. At the very beginning level I would start with fundamentals from whatever book I feel would be best for the student depending on their age and knowledge. Beforehand I definitely will need to asses their knowledge so I can do so accordingly. I however will now focus on solely fundamentals and will try to include in songs that the student would like to learn as long as it is in the bounds of reality, the lessons I provide are only part of the equation and the real work is what is put in after the lesson. I like to approach teaching in a relaxed style. I find students do better when they are relaxed and comfortable. I love to see my students gain excitement to their playing as they see themselves progressing. I plan my assignments based on the students desire to improve. The more they improve the more their desire for playing is fueled. In addition, I want to expose the student to many different approaches to playing and have them choose the style that will best suit them. Read More

I graduated from Marshall University in 2006 with a degree in Music Education. A former professional music educator, my desire for freelancing and travel led me on a varied path all over the U.S. and Europe. Finally having settled in St. Pete, I hope to return to an endeavor I love so much - teaching musicians! I've played on cruises, in orchestras and operas, for musicals, as a soloist, and as many jazz, community, marching, symphonic, brass, etc. ensembles as you can imagine! Read More

In my opinion, my goal for the student is to be motivated, and stay motivated to try to also work at their instrument outside their lessons on their own. I would not want to cram information down their throats, but I also would not want to spend too much time on tasks that would get the student or myself carried away. The process of slowing things down and working them in chunks is, in my opinion, very efficient because the retention sets in really well and it also helps the student get in the habit of how to practice properly, and this goes for any level of student.
