Typically when I begin with children I incorporate the Hoffman Method and Books such as the Little Mozarts books, Alfred, Faber and Master Theory. I allow for children to learn fundamentals in a fun way so they can begin to read music and perform if they are interested. Students get to learn the basics like Mary had a little lamb, hot cross buns, jingle bells, and other fun tunes. Each child is different so with careful evaluation of their specific needs and abilities, I decide on which approach would best fit that student. For beginning students both children and adults, I typically start with Bruce Pearson's Standard of Excellence books. Once my younger students have progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire that is appropriate for their first recital performance. Once the adults have progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I try to find out what the student is interested in and guide my instruction towards that interest, all while keeping the lessons engaging and fun. Oftentimes I tailor lessons that ive created in my past to create lesson plans for individual students. I oftentimes use action research methods in helping me determine whether or not the teaching method that is being used in the lesson is effective for the student receiving lessons. For beginners, I recommend Standards of Excellence and if the parent's budget allows, a subscription to Smart Music which can monitor and record daily practice and inform a student of minor errors so growth can happen between lessons. For intermediate or advanced students, I like to establish a well rounded warm-up routine for their practice and move into solo repertoire appropriate for their level.
