I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. This is very important for me because when they achieve their goals, then they are happy and want more of that. Without fun this is impossible, if they really enjoy play their instrument, it never looks like hard work for them. Every student requires a uniquely tailored teaching style, but also they possess a unique set of strengths and "weaknesses" that will be addressed. I do not believe in the "cookie-cutter" approach to teaching. I believe that fundamentals (scales, tuning exercises, lip slurs, technical excecises) are important as these are the key to unlocking the instrument as a means of self-expression, by eliminitating the infamilarity and oddness of the trombone. That being said, I believe that technique should be approached in the most musical way possible, and I strive to teach technique through actual music.  My teachers, as were most successful brass players, were influenced by the legendary tubist of the Chicago Symphony, Arnold Jacobs. In the first lessons, I explain the the beginner students the basic functionality of the instruments, the proper way to hold the instruments, how to produce a clear sound from the instruments and a Major scale ascending and descending, the one from which the first lessons or the next lessons is written. If the students already had books from prior music instructor, we pick up from the last lessons after answering questions t o make sure the students thoroughly understand the lessons from the previous chapters and he or she is ready to proceed to the next lessons.
