Overview:

My four years playing in the Navy was an experience in learning that could not have been accomplished elsewhere. I traveled the world performing concerts everywhere and finally ending up being the lead trumpet with the then brand new Orlando Naval Training Center Show Band. After leaving the Navy, I formed my own show band and toured the US for five years, playing night clubs and backing up such entertainers as The Four Aces, Joanne Castle, Bobby Rydell, Fats Domino, Dick Contino and Al Hirt. I then joined the international singing group, The Four Aces, where I became their musical director, bass singer and trumpet soloist for 42 years, before retiring last year. I have played first trumpet with the American Legion Symphonic Band for 10 yrs., the Symphonic Band of the Palm Beaches and South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble, plus playing lead trumpet in several big bands in South Florida. I've worked with and in front of some of the best musicians in the world. Playing trumpet has been my life since I was 12 and teaching others to love and appreciate music and playing trumpet as much as I do, has been a huge goal of mine.

EXPERIENCE

I have instructed several big bands and students in the finer points of playing and interpreting music. I do believe I have the ability to inspire others to play better and learn to enjoy music, whether as a professional or amateur. The trumpet is one of the most demanding instruments and I feel I have learned throughout the years how to teach others to get the most out of their instrument. I also believe we are never to old to learn new things and how to play better ... and that includes myself!

METHODS USED

With beginners, I start with the basics of acquiring the best sound possible, believing sound to be the fundamental building block. I then start with scales, teaching fingering, and basic reading. Of course, my methods depend on the age and level of student I am teaching. Everything varies with each student. The more advanced the student is, the more they will know exactly what they want to learn and how they want to learn. Beginners require much more patience and understanding, while older students may just want to enjoy playing tunes, or fine tune the skills they already possess.

LESSON STYLE

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for playing trumpet. Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. I want each of my students to learn and enjoy music.
