I am a musician, composer, and educator seeking to share my musical knowledge with students who are eager to learn. I was born into a musical family, and was exposed to great music from an early age. I began playing the piano when I was eight, picked up the saxophone at ten, and have been playing flute and clarinet now for about six years. For a young child to love music, a teacher must introduce it to him or her in a passionate way, without forcing it one the child. The struggling student is just as capable of loving music, just as much as the accomplished one. As I mentioned earlier, all students learn at different paces, so I teach each student as close as humanly possible to their level. For beginning students, I typically start with the method book that the child is given by the school Music teacher, making certain that they are at least adequately prepared to play their assigned studies (or pages) for their school Music lesson. I also incorporate playing the Duets provided in that volume, along with the students. I then suggest that they purchase other necessary methods, duets and solos at their local Music Store(s), as they progress, and they will therefore require more advanced Musical materials than that used at their school. For beginning brass students, I typically work on developing on their embrasure and proper playing technique. Getting everything secure right at the beginning is the key to having players who are comfortable and will result in greater successful down the line. Depending on how experienced the student is, I make sure to gauge where they are at regarding music theory and music history. Although the main goal of learning an instrument is to learn how to express yourself through music, it is important to understand how we can do that by having a solid understanding of theory and history. I've found that teaching students on a week-by-week basis through exercises that I create for them has been very successful, especially since a lot of method books are very limiting, and they expect every student to be starting out with the same baseline.
