My teaching balances improvisation-guided exploration with firm technical training. It is important for students to be excited about discovering new things as well as being encouraged by achieving clearly-defined realistic goals, which we discuss at every lesson. In addition to this balance, I encourage a lot of listening. Music is a 'heard art' and learning to listen attentively is key to musical growth. To this end, listening assignments (and likely additional suggestions!) are usually given in every lesson, determined by the student's interests, area of study, and current focus. Read More

My experience in teaching starts from me being an instructor for the chamber ensemble back in college. I became an instructor when the director came to me and asked if I was interested in becoming a music instructor. I always encouraged my students to practice everyday. By practicing every day then student will notice that they are progressing. If a student isn't progressing then I'm not doing my job. I encourage my students to enter any competition or recitals. I am a fun but tough teacher that holds high expectations for the learner as well as myself. My goal is to make sure the learner is exceeding his/her goals as a musician. I graduated from Westminster Choir College with a BM in Music Education, a minor in Musical Theater, and a Masters of Arts in Teaching. I am in my 4th year teaching, and currently work as a middle school band director. Read More

My teaching style is very analytical yet engaging! I try to establish a good relationship before pushing a student. At that point I will ask the student to play to the best of his/her ability. I teach in a style that helps children isolate problem areas, so that they can practice specific excerpts they are struggling with. I also do a lot of ear training and music theory to ensure that students are obtaining well-rounded musical skills. Read More

To date I have been teaching trumpet lessons for two years, which began during my senior year of college. Although I've only had a few students, the instruction I've been able to provide has been very rewarding. For students who are less experienced, my focus is to encourage music exploration and to find music that excites young players and grabs their attention. Even though music performance is a challenging craft, it doesn't mean there isn't room for fun! Read More

For students just starting out the focus is always on the fundamentals. Hal Leonard has some great Essential Elements books. When students show progress with these types of instruction manuals we'll usually jump to specific pieces of music that focus on the elements that we learned about in our method books. Lessons are tailored to the student and his or her needs and goals. All students aren't shooting to play at Carnegie Hall or tour the World. Read More
