For beginning students, I normally start with Essential Elements then move onto Schlossberg and Irons for tone and flexibility; then I start them on the Clarke studies 1st and 2nd studies. I emphasize finger exercises, flexibility, tone, and sight reading. Once the student is advanced enough I start teaching appropriate literature. Once the student has advanced to where I can see that they have a good grasp of the fundamentals of the instrument, that is typically when I begin to introduce solo repertoire and supplement with my own material.
