I have performed in music ensembles since childhood. As an elementary school student I performed in regionally recognized handbell, soprano recorder, and choir ensembles and I am a strong advocate of these types of ensembles at the elementary level. As a middle and high school student I participated in jazz, concert, symphonic, and marching band. While attending Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia I participated in Orchestra (trumpet), Glee Club, and Jazz Band (piano) and have extensive experience performing in symphonic and concert ensembles ensembles. Since most of the students I teach are members of a band program, I make sure that most of my lessons are based on what is being learned at school. Planning an individual practice schedule is imperative for their success but at the same time make it enjoyable so the student will want to practice. Constant acknowledgement of their progress each lesson the student more eager to learn. Even though the school program may require students to learn from specific material, I also tailor instruction to music they enjoy performing. Read More

I first started teaching private lessons on a routine basis starting in 2016 while I was in school. Having finished my degree, I currently teach full time with a studio of over 30 students in grades 5 through 12. I have learned an incredible amount from teaching students how to play the trumpet, I tell many of my students that I have learned just as much from them as they have from me. I still take private lessons from teachers around the central Texas area and beyond when I can work it into my schedule so that I can keep learning and passing on whatever I learn to my students. In general and for any subject or instrument that I teach It is very important since the beginning to make an evaluation of skills and that provide me the way to do a individual learning project. Evaluation use to be continuously and in every class I take note about contents, progress and observations. My program pretends in every cases to form a professional musician although if students just want to strengthen any technical or musical aspect, learn an specific music style or musical work there will be accepted as well. I believe in learning the fundamentals but I believe that experience should be enjoyable. That's why we "play" music in the first place! This can mean different things to different students but a focus on positive reinforcement and encouragement toward specific musical goals will always be the guiding factor in my approach. I also encourage students to take ownership of the musical skills learned by experimenting with composition and improvisation. Read More

I strive to have a positive and friendly relationship with students. Respect of eachother is also important. I teach each student uniquely and do not stick to a "cookie cutter" approach. Everyone has unique physiology and strengths and weaknesses, so each person should be taught according to their specific characteristics. I also try to explain playing processes and ideas clearly to ensure comprehension. I often use analogies, comparisons, and visuals to make teaching concepts more clear. Read More

Some of my students like to use youtube to learn to read music as a video game. It's a fun way to play. (brassified.com) You have a choice of what kind of songs you'd like to play. I had one student once who only wanted to play Patriotic Tunes, so that is what we played. He can play the Star Spangled Banner really well. I prefer the old way of teaching from the use of Simple 3 note songs, progressing note by note. Read More
