Instruments: Piano Trumpet
My approach to teaching is centered around whether the student is having fun. My goal is never to force anyone to become a professional in our lessons. If you want to get to that level I can certainly help, but I am more concerned about having fun playing trumpet and piano. We will do a lot of listening homework as well, since listening is just as important as playing. A lot of my students so far really appreciate that balance and the break between playing their instruments. Read More
Instruments: Trumpet Music
I believe there is no "cookie cutter" method to teaching so I tailor my lessons specifically to each of my students. I have found that having a strong foundation in classical music sets the tone for musical excellence for all styles, regardless of age or musical maturity. From that perspective I like to start all of my students on The Arban's and Herbert L. Clarke Method books for trumpet. As we progress, I will add other method books/repertoire that emphasize what the student wants to learn or to highlight an area the student or I think could use improvement. Read More
Instruments: Trumpet French Horn
I am a firm believer in "sound before sight" techniques at the very beginning. Students will learn strong fundamentals and start making a great sound that will encourage them to keep on playing. Eventually, written music is essential, and I tend to use a wide variety of printed books including various "band" methods (Essential Elements, Sound Innovations, etc.) I'm happy to work with whichever book students are required to have for their in-school lessons. Instruments: Piano Voice Trumpet Acoustic Guitar
I have taught music for most of my adult life. I have taught classes as well as group and private lessons for brass instruments, voice, beginning piano and guitar. I have been doing more private lessons now that I am retired and have taught a variety of students of different ages and levels. I like to find out what a student's personal and musical goals are early on and then focus the lessons on achieving those goals. Read More
Instruments: Piano Guitar Voice Trumpet
I start by finding the things students like most about their instruments and given style to learn. We then try to pick apart and play based off of that. Certain techniques facilitate practical application. For instance, If a student is getting ready for an audition, there are techniques where the student can learn how to cope with the anxiety. Generally my students select their own repertoire, and I use that music to teach lessons about theory and composition, while trying to sneak in some improvisation as a confidence and skills builder. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More
