I began teaching people how to play instruments when I was in high school, by teaching new students to the band how to play percussion. I then continued teaching once in college by volunteering at local high schools helping new students to the band programs learn brass and percussion. From there I worked with the Rich South high school band director and the Jack Hille middle school band directors. I started giving private lessons out my freshman year of college 5 years ago. During that time I had students from my previous high school and junior high. Both age groups gave me the chance to find ways to help different levels of playing and what to focus on with different levels of playing and understanding of the horn. I also incorporate reflective questions for students to get them thinking about the music in new ways (e.g., structurally, historically, philosophically, etc.). As someone who has struggled with many aspects of learning to play the trumpet, I believe that I am particularly well-equipped to patiently help students work through similar issues.
