I use elements of the master brass teachers' methods. The teachings of Arban, Clarke, Colin, Arnold Jacobs, and Carmine Caruso are my influences, and I use their ideas and exercises in lessons.I emphasize the fundamentals of trumpet playing: tone production, articulation, flexability, and finger dexterity. It is important for students to play by ear as well as read written notation. Read More

My teaching experience began in Webster, South Dakota as their high school band director for 11 years. I was then invited to move back to my college town of Brookings, South Dakota to be their middle school band director. I moved to Sioux Falls and taught in the Catholic School System for a number of years. Then I was fortunate to teach my last 11 years in beautiful southern California where I taught instrumental music at elementary to high school levels. Read More

As a music educator, my teaching style extends far beyond the technical mastery of the instrument. While I believe that strong fundamentals are crucial, I also place great emphasis on nurturing the creativity, individuality, and personal growth of each student. Music is a deeply personal and expressive art form, and my goal is to not only help students develop as skilled musicians but also to encourage them to embrace their own unique voice as performers and human beings. I am very big on rewards programs and keeping students excited about what they are playing. This required reasonable, achievable goals that still push the student to go beyond their comfort level. Positive reinforcement is so important, especially with early players and when we hit walls in our growth. Seeing exactly where a student is at and understanding the encouragement they need is what makes a good teacher. Read More

Throughout my musical career I have used many method books to improve my playing anywhere from beginning band books on up to the Arbans trumped method and have gained knowledge from each and everyone of them. Each of the many books I have used have been valuable in making me the player that I was. The information that I have gained through studying this material has helped me become the teacher that I am today, and my goal when teaching any student is to pass on what has been given to me throughout my lifetime. I started teaching trumpet lessons as a senior in high school, and continued on through college and into my professional playing career. I have taught students interested in the genres of jazz, classical, and modern music, and value all 3 genres equally. I have found teaching students all 3 styles simultaneously is beneficial as all these styles present different challenges and techniques which ultimately provide students with a wide variety of opportunities whether they are beginning, intermediate, or advanced players. When taking on beginner students, I typically use a blend of method books and novice musical pieces to begin to build musicianship. With intermediate musicians, I tend to seek out anything of interet to the student while incorporating harder repertoire to strengthen musicianship and to continue to peek interest in music. With adult musicians, I let them guide me to their area of interest, and I capitalize on that to guide them to better musicianship, no matter what their skill level may be. Read More
