My method varies for every student but I have a very specific plan for each level of experience. Beginners would focus on essential elements books and beginner packets that cover basics and also have rewarding solo pieces. More advanced students would focus on scales and long tones with etudes for fundamentals and repertoire for solo playing and performances. For beginning students I usually start with the Standards of Excellence series of method books. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals of playing, I will introduce solo repertoire students can begin working on to explore aspects of playing such as expression, tuning, phrasing, and different articulations. I first started teaching and helping run brass sectionals at some local schools in 2004, but did not start teaching regualarly until I completed my degree in 2011. I find that young musicians make the most progress when playing for and with other people. I aim to make lessons fun and engaging and put a strong emphasis on playing duets. I also encourage students to enter competitions and play recitals. I have found competitions and recitals motivate students both before and after the event. Read More
