I am an Elementary Music teacher at Richard T. Castro Elementary in Denver Public Schools. I am certified by the Colorado Department of Education to instruct music though all grade levels (K-12). Due to COVID-19 forcing schools to be remote, I have become skillful at teaching music online through (Skype, Google Meets, FaceTime and Zoom). If my students don't love practicing trumpet at home then I've done something wrong! I started teaching private piano 1991 and have taught over 200 private students since starting. I have taught K-12 music in public schools since 1991. My student ages have run from 3 to 66+. As I am retiring at the end of this present school year, I am expanding my times available for private students - piano, keyboard, ukulele, guitar and all brass instruments are welcome. With most beggining students I use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements 2000. For intermediate students I find the Rubank methods move at a faster pace and put a larger emphases on scales. For beginning students, when students are ready I will introduce an easy solo book. In most cases I use Belwin Master Solos or an Essential Elements supplement depending on the interests of the student. For students interested in learning jazz or other forms of improvisation, I would use Hal Leonard's "How to Play from a Real Book" in combination with the Hal Leonard or Aebersold play-along series. I like to understand a student on a musical level, thus letting their ability level and their drive push me in the direction most useful for the student's success. I encourage them by setting specified goals and show them how to attain them while guiding them through any necessary musical concepts they may meet along the way.
