For beginning students I usually start with the Standards of Excellence series of method books. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals of playing, I will introduce solo repertoire students can begin working on to explore aspects of playing such as expression, tuning, phrasing, and different articulations. My method varies for every student but I have a very specific plan for each level of experience. Beginners would focus on essential elements books and beginner packets that cover basics and also have rewarding solo pieces. More advanced students would focus on scales and long tones with etudes for fundamentals and repertoire for solo playing and performances.
