I believe every mind and thus every student is different. So especially when teaching something inherently creative like music, I almost always have to be inventive with my pedagogy. Every student has their own interests, learning style, and goals, and as an educator, listening to and really HEARING those is just step 1. From there, we begin learning fundamentals--exercises on the instrument, with breathing, and mental practice--which are reviewed with the student from beginner to professional. People don't realize how important daily consistency can be, even for a short span of time. As students grow and become more comfortable on the horn, I slowly start introducing more and more advanced concepts, while still giving them room to experiment on their own and discover their own interests. There are a few exercises that I will continue to enforce, but for the most part, I try to avoid pushing any student in a certain direction when it comes to repertoire because the most important thing is that they stay engaged and develop a passion for the music. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. I've been teaching in the greater Los Angeles area for almost 20 years, teaching students from ages 4 - 92 (yes, really! 92!).
