My method of teaching is to start students with a strong foundation of buzzing and making characteristic sounds on the horn. This includes buzzing with and without the mouthpiece. Also, my students must be able to read music. Reading music is very important to me, having the students be musically literate with a decent tone will take a student far in their musical career. It was a great honor. Late into highschool I was accepted at the DCI CADETS for 3rd trumpet part. This is the second best drum corp (at the time) in the world out of over a dozen different division 1 corps. Lip slurs, long tones, embouchure amp; tuning are all key assets for beginners. Now for my advanced players we will definitely start in the music bible (The Arban Book) and work from start to finish. There is nothing more inspiring and rewarding than watching a student grow. For that reason, I meet students where they are. After an initial assessment of knowledge and skill, I began tailoring lessons for each student individually depending on their skill level. Typical lessons would include a relevant theory mini lesson, teacher playing demonstration, and teacher guided practice.
