One of the pillars of my teaching criteria is that I treat each student uniquely, I generally do not believe in a one size fits all approach. That being said, a second pillar of my criteria is that my students always strive to create their sound in the most efficient and tension free manner. For beginners, I pull information and exercises from the Remington and Bordogni books. In addition to that, especially for totally new beginners, I like to use a back and forth technique. Read More

My name is Kevin. I am a professional trombonist and teacher based in the Chicagoland area. Not every person is going to become a musician, as we all have our own passions and dreams. I want my students to find joy, acceptance, and relief from music, not dread and loathing. I like to ask questions such as "How did playing this passage make you feel? or "What is this piece of music mean to you?" Every piece of music elicits some response from us, and I fully believe that recognition and further development of that response can change the way we perceive music. Read More

For beginning students, I typically start with breathing exercises geared towards tone production as well as mouthpiece buzzing to start strengthening the student's embouchure. For more developed students, I try to guide them accordingly around their interests to keep the lessons fresh and more importantly, FUN. A typical lesson will consist of but not limited to, warm-up Call and Response exercises, where the student mirrors what I play. This is not only a time for them to develop aural skills, but to also hear and see professional playing up close and gives the student an example in developing their own musical concept. Read More

I was fortunate enough to receive partial scholarship to attend the DePaul University School of Music and concentrate my work there in Jazz Studies. During my time at the university, I had the opportunity to broaden my perspective on the trombone by studying with several of the trombone faculty. I spent most of my time working with Tim Coffman, but was able to work with composer and arranger, Thomas Matta, and Charles Vernon, the bass trombonist in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Read More

I have a passion for teaching music! It is so rewarding to watch others grow and develop not only as musicians, but as people. In my studio, students learn in a fun and challenging environment that leads to rapid musical growth. I use aural and visual teaching methods, along with demonstration and imagination, to create a holistic approach to teaching that all students can grasp. In my instruction I try to be balanced in music selection. Read More

I have always loved teaching. I taught martial arts for several years, and I have also taught private lessons for most of my college career. I think that there are fundamentals that are necessary to brass playing, and that if you work to build those fundamentals then you can be successful in any playing situation. I am also adament that musicianship has to come first and technique issues have to be subservient to making great music. Read More
