Instruments: Trombone
My teaching experience began in the late 90's volunteering for many professional bands that would going into area high schools and perform for the music department. I was approached my several parents and music directors to give lessons. As a teacher, I try to remove any road blocks a student is having by developing well rounded musician. As a performer, my career has taken me across the Mid-West and abroad on tours as far as Russia and Poland. Read More

My methods start with building individual plans for each student. Whether this is from scratch or from a method book I try to see what each student is successful in and struggling with to guide my teaching. While I attempt to be fun, understanding, and motivating this doesn't mean I am lackadaisicalwith my lessons. I expect the best my students can put forth while they should expect the same from me. Hi! My name is Matthew, and I have been playing trombone for 15 years and teaching for 3 years. I graduated from the Eastman School of Music with my Bachelors degree in trombone performance in 2017 under the tutelage of Mark Kellogg of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and I am currently pursuing my Masters degree at Northwestern University under the tutelage of Michael Mulcahy of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. I began my college career with a seat in an orchestra being my end game, now that I have had the privilege to teach a full studio of students, I want to pursue any opportunities in music education that I can. Depending on the level of the student, there is a sequence over time of method and etude books that I use in my lessons. I also incorporate solo repertoire and encourage my students to take part in activities such as the IMEA Solo and Ensemble Competitions. Regardless of the students ability, teaching fundamentals of the instrument are my priority. I encourage students to practice daily, so that our lessons together can be as fun and productive as possible. Read More

The approach, overall, is to drive toward the student's goal. When someone wants to learn how to play an instrument well enough to play in a band or orchestra, I usually consider two needs - playing music and interpreting written music. These are basic parts of education, literally easy to define by achieving pages in etude books. In addition, though, there is a third component to meeting the set goal: writing music - a sensibility that you can create. Read More
Instruments: Piano Trombone
The methods I use to teach depend on a number of factors. For enrolled in beginner band at their school, I will use whichever method their school is using. If the school is not using a specific method, I use the Rubank method supplemented with my own materials. For more advanced players I assign various etude books, jazz play along books, and method books based on the students needs. I provide all the materials for my beginning piano students for the first few months, then assign method books based on the student's interests. Read More

In my lessons, I aim to not only cover the skills in playing the instrument, but also basic music theory. I also incorporate reflective questions for students to get them thinking about the music in new ways (e.g., structurally, historically, philosophically, etc.). My aim is that students are able to do a lot of playing in lessons and to be able to ask questions (especially why some aspect of music works the way it does!). Read More
