If the students have music from classes in school, I will also assist them with that. I try to keep the lesson light, and enjoyable! In the first lesson, I assess the student's current ability and also discuss the student's personal goals and interests in music. Based on this information, I create a daily fundamentals routine for the student to use to improve the basic building blocks of playing a musical instrument. I also allow students to bring in music that interests them from solo material and pieces of music from band class. That way they look forward to practicing and can gain an appreciation for the trumpet. I also want the student to look forward to lessons with me. If the student is enthusiastic and driven, the rest falls into place naturally. That's the way it's been for the students I've taught, and the way it began for myself.
