Typically when I begin with children I incorporate the Hoffman Method and Books such as the Little Mozarts books, Alfred, Faber and Master Theory. I allow for children to learn fundamentals in a fun way so they can begin to read music and perform if they are interested. Students get to learn the basics like Mary had a little lamb, hot cross buns, jingle bells, and other fun tunes. For beginning students I would begin with a basic introduction of the instrument and its history. I believe that each instrument has a story to tell! I use a basic book such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or whatever material the student's band director is using. Flexibility is the key. Generally, my teaching style depends on the student. Why is that? Everyone is unique, and everyone learns differently. It would be absolutely foolish of me to ever think that I can use one teaching method or style for each and every student. So I teach based on the student's learning style and predispositions. Also I tend to do alot of finger techniques as well as aural training, because I believe even though music reading is essential, it does you no good if you can't respond musically to the sounds and the nuances of your environment. For beginning students both children and adults, I typically start with Bruce Pearson's Standard of Excellence books. Once my younger students have progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire that is appropriate for their first recital performance. Once the adults have progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I try to find out what the student is interested in and guide my instruction towards that interest, all while keeping the lessons engaging and fun. I oftentimes use action research methods in helping me determine whether or not the teaching method that is being used in the lesson is effective for the student receiving lessons.
