I'm most comfortable working with beginner to intermediate students, ages 7-11. Initially, I will provide my students with an assessment to learn more about the student's interest and performance level. Subsequently, based upon the assessment results, I will provide my students with a series of warm-up exercises designed to support proper posture, breathing and the overall handling of their respective instrument for every session . For Beginning Students, I suggest using either Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or Rubank's series of books starting with the Elementary Method book in addition to a warm-up that is essential to what they need to work on. Once my students have a grasp of the fundamentals, I suggest a step up in method books to both Rubank Intermediate series and Bordogni Etudes. Trombone: Practice, practice, practice! The trombone is an extremely unforgiving instrument and this is why the words practice need to be repeated many times every lesson. The student needs to understand that in order to get any enjoyment out of playing the trombone they need to practice regularly. Once the student has a regular practice schedule, then their sound will improve and they will enjoy playing. My teaching experience began in my junior year of high school (2009) when I was asked by younger students if I could teach them outside of school. I enjoyed teaching these students, their siblings, and other students up until last year (2013) when my last student left for college. I took a year off from teaching in order to complete my college degree at Towson University, and now that I have graduated I am looking to share my knowledge, experience, work ethic, and passion for music, with students that have a burning desire to pursue music either as a living, or a hobby.
