Manhattan-based jazz trombonist Jimmy has a bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Michigan and a Master's Degree from the Manhattan School of Music. While at the University of Michigan, Jimmy studied under Dennis Wilson as well as Geri Allen and Bob Hurst and performed at the Detroit Jazz Festival. Upon moving to New York, Jimmy became a student of SFJazz trombonist Luis Bonilla and has performed at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, The Blue Note, Zinc Bar, Smalls, and Fat Cat as well as many other venues. While I had spent my first year playing trumpet, I had switched to euphonium before I started my 6th grade year and have been playing that and trombone ever since. I spent my high school and community college years playing jazz music on both instruments, and began playing classical euphonium both in high school and when the ensembles became available upon start at TCNJ. No two students are the same, and I try to take each student's strengths, goals and preferences into account when designing their custom curriculum. For brass, I devise custom exercises for the player in addition to using classic pedagogical texts such as the Arban's and Clarke books. For piano, I start students off with a combination of scale work and repertoire. All lessons with me will include learning a wide variety of repertoire as well as a fair bit of improvisation, as I believe it is an invaluable tool for developing ears, creativity and musical personality. I use these series until a student has progressed enough at the fundamentals of playing that specific functions can be addressed. I am a passionate performer, student, and teacher who loves to play the trombone and sharing my musical discoveries with all those I come across. I graduated with my Master of Music degree in Trombone Performance from Boston University in 2018. I have had the opportunity to perform all over the United States through my involvement with DCI and as a freelance musician.
