I always have the student start by developing a practice routine consisting of long tones, flexibility exercises, scales and the different tonguing attacks; single, double, legato and staccato. Next perhaps finding out what their interest are so we can pick out the appropriate materials. For beginning students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has a grasp on the fundamentals of performance, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital or NYSSMA solo. After the student moves on from basic method books, I introduce more trombone-specific books such as Arban's Trombone Method Book,and Rochut's Melodious Etudes for trombone. I have been teaching music lessons since high school at the South Orange/Maplewood Adult School Summer Program back in 2009. I like to working with kids to encourage them to continue playing music and to build up a steady regimen of practice and self evaluation. I want to make learning music fun for my students and I want them to want to learn more and become better musicians. For beginning students, I typically start with the method book that the child is given by the school Music teacher, making certain that they are at least adequately prepared to play their assigned studies (or pages) for their school Music lesson. I also incorporate playing the Duets provided in that volume, along with the students. I then suggest that they purchase other necessary methods, duets and solos at their local Music Store(s), as they progress, and they will therefore require more advanced Musical materials than that used at their school. Teaching is a joy.  The music is a gift and it is a blessing to share it with others.  I enjoy seeing students learn and pick up music right in front of my eyes.  Teaching is a learning experience for myself as well.  I enjoy working with others and use my skills/experience to inspire others.
