My pedagogy is based on the American jazz tradition and the teachings of Orff and Kodaly. I like to impart a holistic love of music in my students, without boring them with too much history or theory. For beginning students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has a grasp on the fundamentals of performance, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital or NYSSMA solo. After the student moves on from basic method books, I introduce more trombone-specific books such as Arban's Trombone Method Book and Rochut's Melodious Etudes for trombone. For adults, I like to find out what kind of music they want to play and plan my lesson accordingly to skill level. Read More

Navarro is a part of the liberation-oriented free jazz collective, Irreversible Entanglements. After their highly acclaimed self-titled debut album on International Anthem, a second album is due to be released in 2020. Navarro also has a duo project with Brooklyn-based drummer Tcheser Holmes. Michael is a musical director, lyricist/composer, and music producer with an extremely varied background. He formed a medieval ensemble to perform at the premier of ROBIN AND MARIAN, and a Country-Western band for the South African equivalent of the Kentucky Derby. Hes a former musical director for National Lampoon's live shows and television specials, including CLASS OF '86, for which he also wrote several songs. I look to be sure that each student enjoys the material as well as music as a whole. Therefore, each student should be able to progress at their own pace. As a student progresses, I do have an admittedly bad habit of speeding up material a bit too much, so I encourage all students to let me know when something is too much for them. As i look to select material, I like to do a 5 minute test run of the piece to ensure that students enjoy the material before assigning it. Read More

Assisting struggling peers brought self awareness and inevitably made me, as well as the overall group better, allowing me to understand a connection between music performance and education.
