Throughout my teaching career, I have been guided by three principles: 1) In music education, "music" is the adjective and "education" is the noun. It is most important to educate the student *through* music, with the ultimate aim of "teaching them to teach themselves", so that they can enjoy a life of learning in music. 2) Care about the student as an individual. No student advances unless they are working with a teacher who truly CARES about them as individuals as well as their musical progress. Read More

My teaching experience is really varied. I teach kids that are beginners, advanced jazz masterclasses and evrything in between. I personally love this variety because it gives the possibility to experiment different methods and being open to students feedback so I can build the best lessons for them. My experience give the possibility to change my style and also I can draw for a large amount of musical materials to practice with each student. Read More

When I'm working with a student, I want to know everything I can about them as a person; this will inform their growth as a musician, artist and music lover. I am to set realistic expectations for my students, aiming not to frustrate but to celebrate every step taken. In the end, if students can teach themselves and want to learn more about their instrument or any sort of music, I feel like I've done my job. Read More

As a teacher, I like to focus on each students needs as becoming a well rounded musician. I like to work from a few method books including Arbans, Rubank, and Schlossberg for building up your embouchere as a trumpet player. We will focus in on technique, embouchere building, jazz improvisation, and music theory. I always encourage my students that if there is a piece of music they would like to learn, bring it to the lesson and we will work on it. Read More

For students who are just starting out on their instruments, I typically use the Essential Elements book for band, as I believe this is the best book for beginning young students. However, if the student or parent has another book they feel would be better for their growth, I am always open to suggestions. Once students are developing well in their instrumental journey, I will look for repertoire that encourages their growth in the most efficient way possible. Read More

Effective music education is both developmentally and culturally appropriate: By working with the student to understand their interests, I hope to provide them with an experience that will enrich their musical and social life outside of the work we do together. Through infancy, I believe Music Learning Theory is effective for developing musical and linguistic skills. If a student in toddlerhood/childhood shows that they have a preferred way to express themselves musically, I will tailor lessons around the Kodaly (voice), Orff (instrumental), or Dalcroze (dance) philosophies. For beginning students, I typically use Essential Elements or Standard of Excellence (whichever they are not using in school if any). I use these series until a student has progressed enough at the fundamentals of playing that specific functions can be addressed. At that point, I will begin to split instruction into flow studies, flexibility, tone, air movement, and articulation, drawing from a variety of books created by some of the world's leading brass musicians.
