I encourage them to listen to how they play by playback recordings, humming to the tunes using their voice even when playing an instrument, so that they can listen and feel their own music. I've been teaching children at different ages and in different scenarios, if it was musical theater or middle school children preparing for their prom. I also played extensively in Israel's most famous acting college, where I gained the ability to guide actors towards a more polished and honest interpretation. For beginning students, I typically start with the Suzuki Method while combining it with the Essential Elements Method. As the student learns the fundamentals I gradually add scales and exercises to further develop the student's technique. After further progress, I begin to introduce solo repertoire and add other pieces. I pay close attention to what exercises students seem to want to spend the most time on and the ones they get frustrated with. I have found that a combination of classical, jazz and popular styles of music to be most effective with my students. I also stress scales, technique, sight-reading and theory.
