I've been teaching for over 10 years now and I truly enjoy helping my students get more out of themselves. I started on classical piano at a young age, then played a whole lot of guitar focusing on the likes of Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix and more, before joining marching band and jazz band diving deep into drums. In College I started playing bass in bands in Manhattan, and I believe it's this transitions of hopping to many different instruments, starting on the piano, that makes it easy for me to relay the main musical concepts to my students that overlap through all of these instruments. I believe that I have a natural talent for teaching. I was able to solve varied problems or my students. Whether it is stiff hands, bad hand position habits, inability to play polyrhythms, articulation issues, phrasing and ornaments or a general frustration at being unable to control the sound, I have demonstrated time and time again that these problems are not insurmountable. I encourage, when applicable, parent participation, their help and support but if these positives are missing, I found a way to redeem the situation and that resulted in tremendous self-esteem boost of my piano pupils. She was a potential student of my own piano teacher, but this teacher chose to assign this girl to me to teach before taking her on. For all students I stress fluent music reading and a natural stress-free technique. For the early stages I have had good results with Faber's Piano Adventure series, finding that these progress at a reasonable pace and build reading skills logically. For technique I like FJH Music's Accelerando series. These short exercises have a big impact on the student's technique and reading, and bring maximum results in a short time. I also like to assign keyboard harmony drills of my own invention which help the student understand how chords are built and how they are linked within each key. Read More
