I like my lessons to be fun! I like to start my lesson with a "music swap": we each play one minute of a song that we found that week from youtube or spotify and take 30-60 seconds to say why we found it interesting or inspiring (it can be any genre). We then aim to discuss and practice a new technical skill and use exercises to develop it, we work on a song from the method series or a song that the student wants to work on (I often transpose pop/rock songs for my students), and then rhythm training, ear training, and music theory concepts are interspersed throughout. When an instrument is physically easy to play, it is much more enjoyable to practice! Other areas that I focus on include posture, breath support, emboucher, and reed placement. These are fundamentals of a woodwind player, and with some attention can make the playing experience that much more gratifying. I also encourage students to learnaboutthe history of the music they are studying and theirinstrument. I have a great passion for thetraditionand history of western music, and findthat knowledge of this tradition can inspire one to improve and study. Read More

I value my student's love for the content they are learning. I seek to hear what students like to listen to and what music they enjoy, and using that information figure out how best to give listening recommendations and assignments. I hope that by allowing students to express themselves through the music they love, a strong relationship between the student and music can be cultivated for my student and me. Read More

Musical education should be as exciting as it is rewarding. I believe firmly that building a solid foundation in ear training, rhythmic consistency and theoretical knowledge is the surest way to motivate the type of practice that leads to improvement. My aim is always to make students self-sufficient in discovering, analyzing, performing and writing the music that they find most interesting. My students know that lessons with me are the best time to make their worst mistakes, and to achieve their greatest successes and that theyre free to smile the entire time. Read More

This has a lot to do with my master's research around cognitive learning . I teach students based on their desires. For example, if a student is interested in being a fireman then the lesson plans should be built around being a fireman. My saxophone students can expect a systematic approach toward learning.
