I start out with the basics: Major Jazz Scales, Mixolydian Scales, and Minor Scales, Teaching students the importance of playing long tones is constantly enforced . Simultaneously, students learn how to outline the Blues, and transcribe solos. For more advance students, I teach jazz phrasing, intermediate jazz song outlining and jazz enclosures. In 2018, I graduated with B.A. in Saxophone Performance with an emphasis in Jazz Studies at California State University, Long Beach. I typically start beginner students on the Rubank Elementary Method books for saxophone, clarinet, or flute. These books are a great way to introduce the basic mechanics of the instrument, as well as reading music. I generally like to branch out from the method books as soon as possible, by supplementing the basic reading with other technical studies and pieces. For adults and more advanced students, I like to steer the focus more in the direction of what they want to learn, while still teaching the proper fundamentals of the instrument! Read More
