I have found that the combination of foundational teaching and songs that accompany what was just discussed helps students feel like they are applying what they have learned to something the can show off to people to people around them. I love teaching, and I firmly believe that almost anyone can be taught to do almost anything! I have music degrees from Hope College in Holland, Michigan, and USF in Tampa, Florida. After teaching at Hope for 6 years, I joined the Air Force to play with the world-class musicians that make up their bands. I spent 8 1/2 years in Colorado Springs stationed at Peterson AFB, and I loved it! I then moved to Illinois to be stationed at Scott AFB, playing with the USAF Band of Mid-America. Read More

My lessons are structured with attention paid to the fundamentals of each instrument and the fundamentals of music. I have learned that when a student practices a mistake over and over it remains a mistake. I immediately slow the student down and concentrate on just a measure or even two notes to accomplish correct rhythm, fingerings, articulations and phrasing.
