I have been a music educator for over 20 years. I was a middle school band director for 14 years. All of my bands received first division and second division ratings at festivals and my students received first and second division ratings at individual solo and ensemble festivals. In addition, I was a judge for solo and ensemble and festivals. My students took trips to Chicago for music workshops and to see the Chicago Symphony. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at their own pace. I try to make sure that fundamentals are always maintained and that the music we are covering in lessons is stimulating and challenging while still being enjoyable for the student so that they can develop musical expression along with a strong technical foundation. Because I don't have a set template that all students follow, I believe that my constant assessment and evaluation of students needs is effective in making sure that each student's passion is nurtured and developed. I like to customize my lesson plans based on the student's needs. It also depends on the style of music that is being learned. I typically like to start with the Rubank method books. These books follow a progressive sequence of beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. However, this is not necessary; the concept of these books is to get a grasp of the fundamentals. I also provide many fundamental exercises I have created and used in my daily practice. Read More

I am a music educator and performer from Arkansas. I moved to the area to further my studies at UNC Greensboro. Some of my interests outside of music include cooking, fishing, and playing with my cat. I have been teaching for over 5 years now. I am a very open minded instructor and believe that lessons should be structured around every students' needs. I have experience with teaching students as young as 10 years of age to students who were 40 years of age. Read More

I am percussionist, composer and educator, Larry Q. Draughn Jr. I've been "banging on stuff" and trying to understand rhythm for most of my life. The first 16 years of my journey were self taught and the past 13 have been supplemented with formalized training. I've shared the stage with greats like Jimmy Heath, Branford Marsalis, Joey Calderazzo, and Christian McBride to name a few. My gift has and is taking me all around the world. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. The first lesson i assess the student's ability - whether they can play, read music, and what kind of music they like. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their level. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

In light of this, I will provide additional practice materials that are specific to the instrument each student plays or sings. For more advanced students, virtually all material will come from me, with the exception of students who request help with particularly difficult passages in their other repertoire. Regardless of experience, I believe all students should have a solid foundation of fundamental technique and music theory, and the materials I provide will aim to develope those skills. Read More
