Greetings, I'm a recent college graduate who studied secondary education (grades 7-12). I'm a lifelong musician, and have been playing guitar and alto saxophone for about 20 years. I've also been playing piano for about 10 years. I studied music theory, composition, and musicianship for four years; and I continue to use these skills in my practice as a professional musician today. When I have students who want to perform on stage, I challenge them to play guitar without looking at the strings so that they will focus on the audience. It's important that the students set goals for their playing as well, this helps with the self-motivation to practice. It could be something as simple as next week I want to play the single note that has been giving me trouble, or as advanced as I want to be able to play this solo piece from memory in three months. Technique as well as theory are equally important. It is also important to have fun while learning. I like to use the Hal Leonard lesson books combined with excersises that I have created. I can also teach songs requested by students and explain and demonstrate how theory and technique apply to the tune. Improvising and playing along with other musicians in songs or jams is highly recomended. Understanding what each student wants to get out of the lesson is important. Read More
