For beginning students who are children, I usually start with a songbook, such as the Accent on Achievement method book. Once the student has a grasp on the fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire. For adult students, I try to find out what the student is interested in pursuing, and then if they are a beginner, I teach fundamentals through the Rubank method books and supplement with songs that are approapriate to the student's taste. For beginning students, I find that the simpler the methods, the better. Essential Elements is a great series for beginners, and is a good way to teach basic music theory and musical ideas. As students progress, I like to introduce solo repertoire and books that are more specific to the instrument that they are learning. My Student Teaching semester granted me the opportunity to work with elementary and secondary levels; starting beginners and working with students preparing for district band as well as college careers.  It was nice to work with this range in age and skill level, whether they were aiming for career goals or simply playing for fun! I now teach Elementary Vocal / General Music in Baltimore County Public Schools grades k-5. My clarinet professor gave me opportunities to help out with teaching the Woodwind Methods classes at USM for more pedagogical experience. I have my students spend a great deal of time on rhythmic accuracy, scales, and sight-reading. I create my own lesson plans and provide students with a variety of instructional materials. Students begin each lesson with rhythmic drills and scales with gradual increases in difficulty levels. I prefer using Rubank method books and the Klose Complete Method for the clarinet. Students are always free to bring in music from their school band program and/or solos and etudes of their choice. Read More
