For my beginner saxophone students we will start by assembling the instrument and using the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements to learn the basic fingerings and songs. As for my beginner piano students we will start off with the Faber Piano Adventures book and work our way through the lessons. My teaching experience began when I was in college. I taught trombone and euphonium private lessons for several years in the school district that I attended when I was a student. Additionally, I also have done All State Masterclasses for the TMEA trombone etudes. Encouraging regular practice, building the life-long skill of discipline, and hard work are key skills that I enjoy getting to emphasize to my students, as it has a tendency to build student progression and ultimately gain a passion for learning the instrument. Additionally, I like to work with scales and long tones in a more advanced way, expanding the range of the instrument and tone quality as we prepare repertoire. With students interested in jazz, either as their primary course of study or in addition to classical music, we focus even more on scales and arpeggios, aiming to master first the most commonly used keys and then expanding to 12 key mastery. I like to begin with a play-along book like Jamey Aebersold's "Maiden Voyage", stressing the beginnings of improvisation, then moving on to more advanced tunes and chord progressions. Read More

I played alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and bass clarinet in Denison's Symphonic Band for 4 years and I played lead tenor in their Jazz Ensemble for 3 years. I also play with the Austin College Wind Symphony, the Greater Texoma Jazz Ensemble, and in the orchestra for musicals with the Sherman Community Players. I am currently playing tenor saxophone in the SOSU Symphonic Winds, first tenor in the SOSU Jazz Band, and I play tenor in a jazz combo named Wombo Combo. Read More
