Instruments: Saxophone Flute Clarinet
I've been a serious musician since taking up (baritone) saxophone at age 13, over 40 years ago. I first took up clarinet at 10, and later added flute, but saxophone has been my main focus over the years. I play around the Austin area in a variety of settings from big bands to musicals to rock/blues groups to studio recording to classical ensembles; pretty much whatever is asked for. Some of my previous teachers include Jim Riggs at the University of North Texas, Harvey Pittel at the University of Texas, Jeff Elwood at California State University Fullerton, and Joe Eckert at TCU. I am a three-time Grammy nominated multi-instrumentalist, composer, and teacher. I am proficient on saxophone, clarinet, flute, upright bass, electric bass, and piano. In 2006, I graduated with a degree in Jazz Composition with an emphasis in Saxophone Performance from the University of Texas at Austin. For some time in the mid-2000's, my wife and I had our own big band in Central Texas that played our original compositions exclusively. In 2015, our music was the centerpiece of a Hollywood screenplay with directorial consideration by Clint Eastwood and others. I set realistic goals for each student, and I encourage each student to practice to meet their goals each week. I also make myself available to all students at anytime for questions during their practice. I have a system of teaching jazz improvisation that ensures that every student can play and read changes. I take all of the bad habits away from each student to promote healthy performing habits. Read More

I’ve already stressed this, but I’m always starting at the same level my student is on. The last thing I want to so is overwhelm a beginner! Therefore, my lessons will be tailored to your learning needs and habits. I am always open to feedback, and I encourage students to stop and ask me questions! I’m very laid back. Sure, you could say I’m a hippie, but that doesn't mean I don’t have expectations. Read More

I usually balances the time by working first on fundamental/technical aspects of the instrument: intonation, articulation, rhythm, and tone; followed by study of the particular student's chosen repertoire, whether it be jazz standards, rock/pop/blues tunes, classical literature or etudes. I believe in teaching students to organize their practice time wisely, isolating specific issues on the instrument. Cultivating personal musical goals with each student is also very important, in order to maximize the student's enjoyment of the time they spend playing. Read More

For beginning students who have no experience on their instrument, I usually spend a fair chunk of time working on basic technique using books like the Essential Elements series or Greg Horne's similar books for folk instruments. I usually combine the book material with other songs/pieces relevant to each student's interests. For more advanced students, I usually find a mix of repetoire relevant to their interests and technical exercises for them to refine and develop technique. Read More
