My approach to lessons is one that is customized to the student. I don't believe in a one size fits all method. I use the same material and books that have helped me improve as well as customizable methods for each student. These methods include: learning how to process information effectively, how to retain the information and also how to excecute that information at any moment. I also help with the psychology of music learning and performing which is often overlooked. Read More

I’ve already stressed this, but I’m always starting at the same level my student is on. The last thing I want to so is overwhelm a beginner! Therefore, my lessons will be tailored to your learning needs and habits. I am always open to feedback, and I encourage students to stop and ask me questions! I’m very laid back. Sure, you could say I’m a hippie, but that doesn't mean I don’t have expectations. Read More

We like lessons to be fun and challenging. Sight reading abilities really help musicality and ability for spontaneity. Part of each lesson is spent on good posture, breathing and excellent practice methods. We slow down the difficult passages and get them played correctly. Attention to tone and a great armbiture are always kept in mind, as well as hand position and minimal movement as the songs and exercises are played. Read More

My process is based on (but does not adhere strictly to) the Classical approach to Western tonal harmony and asks that the students develop certain fundamentals of technique and theory. In my experience, this structure creates the strongest foundation for pupils to build the rest of their musical lives on, whether professionally or solely for personal enjoyment. All of my students are on the fast track to studying music theory. Read More

I teach always. I teach by example, and I teach formally. My formal teaching background begins in church when I was 19. I did my mom a favor and started teaching/leading the children's choir. It was fun, I enjoyed it thoroughly, and our 2 performances went GREAT! It gave me a taste for it so I became an actual teacher in the SMCISD school district as a Focus Teacher (Special Education). For beginning students, I emphasize fundamentals, including technique, sound quality, and reading. With children, I like to start with method books such as Essential Elements or the John Thompson series for piano. For more advanced pupils, I will start with what they are currently working on, find areas for improvement, and then adjust the curriculum accordingly. However, no matter what the students interests or skill level are, I try and keep the lessons light, fun, and interesting! Read More

For beginning students who have no experience on their instrument, I usually spend a fair chunk of time working on basic technique using books like the Essential Elements series or Greg Horne's similar books for folk instruments. I usually combine the book material with other songs/pieces relevant to each student's interests. For more advanced students, I usually find a mix of repetoire relevant to their interests and technical exercises for them to refine and develop technique. Read More
