For piano beginners, I generally start with the Faber method books, but I always supplement with other books or pieces that are tailored to the students abilities and interests. There will be short pieces to practice at home which can be mastered in a week or two, and frequently there will be longer challenge pieces that will be worked on for several weeks with the goal of giving the student a piece they will enjoy playing for themselves or for friends and family. I began teaching in 2012 when I was awarded the Graduate Assistant position at Western Michigan University. As a G.A., I was responsible for teaching non-music majors saxophone lessons, theory and ear-training, as well as coaching ensembles. I also taught flute and clarinet at Paramount Charter Academy in Kalamazoo, Michigan to middle school students. It was a very rewarding experience to teach people of various ages, ability levels, and goals, and allowed me to refine my teaching methods based on the needs of each student. I currently teach music theory, piano, saxophone, clarinet, flute, drums, and composition at Belle Arti Center for the Performing Arts in Queens, NY. Read More

I create custom lesson plans graded to progressively build the student's confidence, introducing something new at each lesson. If students fall in love with a piece well beyond their current capability, I don't usually say no; instead, I help them master the challenges step by step. I require students to learn scales; however, I avoid most technical method books. Instead, I invent exercises based on the challenges of a particular piece. Read More

I started teaching music lessons back when I was 14, when friends would ask for tips or lessons, and local parents wanted lessons for their children. I fell in love with the act of helping others to realize the music inside them, and have been teaching consistently ever since. Learning any musical instrument involves learning about oneself. The student and teacher must work together to define their goals, be comfortable confronting shortcomings, discover how they learn best, and find the patience and drive to practice for long enough to get better. Over 30 years of private and public/private teaching experience. I love to teach. In my lessons, I get to know each student personally, learn their strengths and weaknesses and proceed from there. Each student is unique and learns at a different pace. It is important for a teacher to know this and to work on technique, pieces, and recital planning to best showcase each individual. My methods have always been successful, and taking a student from point A to point B, C, D and beyond is so rewarding in my work. Read More

I teach out of instructional books, notably books by Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, and Alfred. Sometimes, I use sheet music print outs, or draft up my own exercises. I go back in forth in a non-conventional manner, adapting accordingly to the student's needs. I like to incorporate exercises and warm ups to improve and enchance technique. I also teach songs that the student would like to learn. I'm very patient and rarely rigid in my approach, although I do stick to a general routine that allows a focused approach to learning. The best way for students to improve their proficiency on an instrument is through consistent, weekly practice. In our lessons, we will discover overall musical goals and then weekly goals to help us achieve our dreams. Yes, the dedication must be put in by the student, but organized practice is the quickest way to truly improve. In my lessons, we will work on technique and sight reading as well as improvisation and learning songs. Read More
