I began teaching piano my sophomore year of college. During my college career, I built up a studio of nearly 20 students, tutored college-level piano courses, and worked as a Teacher's Assistant in Sight Singing and Aural Training. Since then, I taught for two years at a Summer Music Conservatory in Texas, led week-long keyboard intensive seminars throughout Western Kenya, and most recently, taught at the nation's largest piano conservatory. My approach is twofold: addressing the mind and addressing the body. I always have beginners learn how to stretch and release tension before they even sing, just like any athlete would. I have them develop a pre-singing routine including these stretches so they can both prepare themselves physically and mentally for every lesson and practice session. However, for those that are a little more outgoing, I first assess what level their at, and begin from there. For beginner students, I am a firm believe in mastering fundamentals but making them fun at the same time. There's no need for fundamentals to be monotonous and boring! For beginning students, who are starting from an early age, I typically combine playtime and learning. For example, for the youngest students, I use the analogy of the seven colors of the rainbow to learn the music notes. Throughout my years of teaching using this technique, I've received a lot of positive feedback from the students that as learning kept them interested and excited about learning the instrument. My teaching style includes using multisensory techniques that get the students reading music, listening to music, playing music, and more. I have discovered over many years of teaching that there are many different styles of learning different concepts. What may click for a student in one part of a lesson visually may not click aurally.
