My teaching experience really started With the DC Youth Orchestra Program as a cellist. Assisting the cello teaches with summer sessions. I also assisted at NC A T State University Orchestra. I mentored student teachers with string ensemble. Currently, I am Assistant to the Minister of Music at The Greater First Baptist Church of Washington DC. The most satisfying moment as a teacher is when a student finally "gets it", and for students, I find that lessons are the most fun when the student feels capable and not overwhelmed. I like to challenge my students and encourage them to exceed even their own expectations of their abilities. With this in mind, my overall teaching philosophy emphasizes gaining technical mastery over the student's chosen instrument, strong music reading and theory skills, along with creativity and improvisation to turn them into well rounded players who can hold their own in just about any music setting from the stage to the studio. There is a theory book I like to use for older students who are later beginners or who have already taken lessons before and there is a Notespeller Book I recommend instead in the Alfred's series for younger beginners. If a student has taken lessons before and starts lessons with me I will see what books they have and if they are interested in continuing with those, or possibly changing to the Alfred's series, or ready to start branching off into more advanced pieces of music like classical, pop, rock and anything they like where we can get sheet music.
