For younger students that are just starting, I've found the Accent on Achievement books to be very helpful in developing the basics of playing. From there, Classically-focused players would learn solo repertoire, Jazz-focused players would learn standards and improvisation, and all the other genres would begin to narrow down their appropriate fields. I've always had incisive experiences from leading small combos, as learning situations. As arranger working with musicians it's a laboratory to knowing the right groove to create blues, rock or jazz. For younger beginning students, I typically use a method book, such as Accent on Achievement or something similar. For older beginners, I typically use the Rubank beginner's book. With this book, the student learns the fundamentals for their instrument. Once the student demonstrates an understanding of this, we will move on to sheet music. For more advanced students, we will typically use an etude book like Klose to explore the technical aspects of musical performance (such as technique development, phrasing, dynamics, etc.). While working on fundamentals, we introduce performance selections that are fun and engaging. For adult learners, I typically chart a path of instruction based upon their goals and interests.
