I've been teaching on and off over the past 10+ years. My first experience teaching in a professional setting was at the Royal Academy of Music in Shrewsbury Massachusetts while taking some time off from college. There I taught up to 30 students in any given week. It's also where I branched out and began teaching beginner to intermediate bass guitar, piano, and drums. Since returning to New York I have taught a number of private students throughout the Hudson Valley. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 8 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 5 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More

From my years of experience both as a musician and as a teacher, communication and trust are the key components to a successful lesson. My students will always know the expectations and goals, just as I would like my students to be open enough to talk about what they are feeling, if the goals are reasonable, and if they are finding success. I will go over a foundation of basics for every student, teaching them how to practice and setting them up for success. Read More

A student will always learn technique and theory on a much deeper level when it is taught in conjunction to music that they like, rather than as a separate academic study. This method maintains a students interest as well. With regards to advanced players, I find that the problem is rarely how to play, but rather what to play, or what NOT to play. This is usually best solved by helping a player to re-examine his or her approach to applying what they already know. Read More

Incidentally, I started teaching when I was still learning myself; in grade-school, on the recorder. I learned early on that my ability to play by memory and through ear afforded me a stark intuitive advantage over peers my own age; naturally, they came to me during our shared lessons to inquire about my talent. While neither of my abilities was necessarily a teachable factor, they did endow me with the ability to "know" my music - through a bit of compositional translation, I was able to share tidbits of knowledge among my colleagues. I make sure my students have a strong foundation, which means I start with classical training. I work on the basics such as posture, articulation, breath-support, vowel shapes, and rhythm. Once they have a strong basis, I move to modern and musical theatre if they desire it. For a student who is going the strictly classical route, I will teach them IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) to help them with pronunciations in foreign languages when singing. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I understand some student may not have much time to practice, so I encourage as long as you practice even once or twice per week , set a short goal even one line two lines on the music or couple of bars, progress little and slow but practice on the right way, building right correct position and get used of it still helpful then nothing or some incorrect habit.
