Gaining a full understanding of the student and their needs is the most effective way for me to cater my instruction. (I should note that I have experience teaching recorder and piano to a student with autism as well). This usually involves speaking with the student in the first lesson/lessons to find out what specifically they want to learn or improve. Once I've figured this out, I begin to find repertoire or create exercises that challenge this student in the respective area of focus.
